Fred has the worst attitude. Ask him a simple question (like when it’ll be done) and he immediately gets offended. He also prices dramatically. When I dropped off my car, I told him—both on the phone and in person—about a coolant leak and a slightly smoking engine with popping noises. He only addressed the coolant leak, completely ignoring the engine issue. While I did sign an estimate for the coolant diagnosis, I expected a competent mechanic to check all concerns I mentioned. Instead, he blamed me for “not mentioning” it. I ended up stuck with him instead of buying another car. I asked him to stop working and put it back together since I never received a full written estimate anyway, but he refused, claiming he couldn’t because I already authorized (I only authorized opening the engine for investigation, not fix it)—which I didn’t because I hanged up the phone on him after he kept yelling over me. Once you push back, he’ll stop calling you altogether. I had to chase him down for updates. I called in the morning and he said he was reinstalling the engine. I called again late in the evening—he casually said it was done. No prior call, no warning, just a bill for thousands. This w

After living in Vallejo for years and years, I finally found Fred & Sons Automotive. As the 2nd car owner of a 1982 Nissan Datsun Sentra wagon, I’ve worked with more than a handful of mechanics in town to keep Little Betty safely on the road. Fred is the absolute best... hands down! He's a gifted mechanic, and he’s a problem solver. He has the equipment, knowledge, skill and expertise to do the most challenging automotive repairs. Initially, Fred detected and solved my ongoing engine overheating problem by following and securing an electrical wire. Then, he used his shop press to replace the control arm bushings on my ‘82 Datsun... a job other shops had been unable or unwilling to do. Over time he checked and repaired the front and rear suspension and the brakes. He repacked the wheels. He serviced the transmission. When my engine failed, he rebuilt my carburetor without complaint because “(he knows) how to do it.” Most recently, he located the source of a brake fluid leak; and, as it turned out it was the brake regulator valve. Located behind the engine on the bulkhead, he had to "bend one (of his) tools to reach it." Fred provides fair and reasonable rates for reliable and ti

Fred and Sons is the BEST automotive shop that I have ever dealt with. I have brought every one of my cars to him since 2007 and no matter what the problem is he has fixed it in a timely professional manner. He always calls me before doing a job to let me know the price. I have brought him over 14 different vehicles. Way better than a dealer.
